How Does Headlight Adjustment Work
It may sound easy, but there are a few things you need to know before adjusting the headlights of your car. With that in mind, we've come up with a short guide on how to keep you from getting fines for walking with unregulated headlights
.
How does automatic headlight height adjustment work?
Quite simply, a sensor compensates for the change in the attitude of the vehicle with respect to the weight of the car in order not to obscure the view of the vehicle coming in the opposite hand.
On some models such as the Toyota Prius , the headlight height adjustment sensor is fitted to the rear suspension , which helps to adjust the Best LED Headlights intensity depending on the weight exerted under the rear axle . The heavier the vehicle gets - even more so if the weight is all concentrated in the trunk - the higher the headlights will get.
To correct the headlight height, the sensor detects the body tilt and compensates in the emitted beam of light, thus avoiding the glare of the vehicle in the opposite hand. It usually uses a small bevel to connect to one of the suspension arms, but the system may vary from vehicle to vehicle.
For vehicles with electric or manual headlight adjustment, a motor within the optical assembly changes the position of the light projector , changing the direction of the beam. This tilt sensor is also used to change brake pressure between axles and to adjust ESC operation, for example by activating the ramp start assistant.
In simpler models, the equipment only turns the high beam on or off when it detects a vehicle in the opposite direction or immediately in front of the car. There are some more advanced variations that can split the beam into different segments, shading the cars ahead while illuminating the remaining area.
More expensive vehicles like BMW , Audi , Porsche and company use projection systems, which even allow you to create “virtual” crosswalks by detecting a pedestrian trying to cross the road, for example.
How to adjust the headlights?
Always use suitable tools that fit perfectly into the adjusting screws located on the headlight housing of your vehicle.
There are usually at least two screws on each headlight: one for vertical adjustment and one for horizontal adjustment. All you have to do is rotate them until projection lines match the marks on the wall.
If the headlights are electric, use the buttons inside the vehicle to align the headlight focus with the markings on the wall.
